Now 80, Yevhen Stankovych was born in what is today the city of Svaliava in western Ukraine. His earliest works, such as the stories contained in the Dikanka collection and his massive Taras Bulba based on the history of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, reveal a profound connection to Ukrainian legends.
